Last week we closed out with John 9 and 10, where Jesus healed a man who had been blind since birth and then watched everyone around him, his neighbors, the religious leaders, even his own parents, pull away on the best day of his life. And then Jesus went looking for him. We talked about the Good Shepherd who knows every sheep by name, and the promise that no one can snatch them out of His hand.

If you missed it, go back and read it before continuing here. Today we move into Luke 15, and if last week felt personal, this week goes even deeper.

Have you ever been in a room full of people and still felt completely alone?

Not the kind of alone that goes away with a phone call or a good conversation. The deeper kind. The kind where you're carrying something heavy and you look around and everyone else seems fine, steady, sorted, and you wonder what's wrong with you that you can't seem to get there.

Maybe you drifted from your faith and you're not sure you're the kind of person God still comes looking for. Maybe something happened to you, something that wasn't your fault, and you ended up lost through no choice of your own. Maybe you've been carrying shame or regret for so long it's started to feel like just a permanent part of who you are.

Luke 15 has one of the most tender answers in all of Scripture for exactly that feeling.

Jesus doesn't just notice the lost. He moves toward them.

Why Jesus Told These Stories in the First Place

Before we get into the parables themselves, the setting matters more than people usually realize.

Luke tells us that tax collectors and sinners were crowding around Jesus to hear Him teach. And the religious leaders were standing nearby, muttering about it. Their complaint was pointed:

"This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Luke 15:2 (NIV)

They meant it as an accusation. Jesus took it as a description He was happy to live up to.

And instead of defending Himself with an argument, He told three stories. Not about things that are lost. About things that are lost and then found. There's a difference, and it matters.

The Sheep That Wandered Off

The first story is short but the detail Jesus chooses is everything:

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?" Luke 15:4 (NIV)

That phrase "until he finds it" is worth sitting with. Not "he tries his best." Not "he makes a reasonable effort and then accepts the situation." He goes after the one until he finds it. Full stop.

And then when he does find it:

"He joyfully puts it on his shoulders." Luke 15:5 (NIV)

That image has stayed with me every time I read it. There are seasons in life when we can walk on our own. And there are seasons when we genuinely cannot, when the weight of everything is too much and we just need to be carried. Jesus is not irritated by those seasons. He doesn't sigh and reluctantly help. He puts the sheep on His shoulders with joy and heads home.

The Coin That Never Wandered At All

The second parable shifts something important.

A woman has ten silver coins and loses one. She lights a lamp, sweeps the entire house, and searches carefully until she finds it.

Here's the thing about a coin. It didn't wander off on its own. It didn't make a bad decision. It got lost through circumstance, through being misplaced, through something that happened to it rather than something it chose.

And Jesus includes that story deliberately. Because some people reading this today don't feel lost because they rebelled or walked away from God. They feel lost because something happened to them. They were hurt. Neglected. Left behind by someone else's choices. Wounded in ways they never asked for.

Jesus doesn't rank whose lostness deserves more attention. Whether you wandered there or were wounded there, His heart moves toward you the same way.

The Son Who Said "I Want What You Can Give Me But Not You"

The third story is the longest and the most layered.

A younger son goes to his father and asks for his share of the inheritance early. In the culture Jesus was speaking into, that request was essentially saying: I wish you were already dead. Give me what's mine and let me go.

The father gives it to him. The son leaves, wastes everything, and hits the kind of bottom where he's so hungry he's looking at what the pigs are eating and thinking it doesn't look that bad.

And then one of the great turning points in all of Scripture arrives in a single quiet line:

"When he came to his senses..." Luke 15:17 (NIV)

Sometimes grace begins right there. Not when everything is fixed. Not when the speech is prepared and the apology is polished. Just when the heart finally turns toward home.

The son starts walking back with a rehearsed speech about unworthiness. He's going to ask to be taken on as a hired servant. He's already talked himself out of being a son.

But then this happens:

"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." Luke 15:20 (NIV)

Read that again slowly.

The father saw him while he was still a long way off. Which means the father was looking. Which means he had been looking every day since his son left, scanning the road, watching the horizon.

And when he saw him, he ran. In that culture, a man of dignity and status did not run. It was considered undignified. But love moved faster than dignity could slow it down.

The son didn't even finish his rehearsed speech before the father called for a robe, a ring, sandals, and a feast. Because repentance in the arms of Christ is not just being allowed back in the house. It is being received with joy.

The Son Who Never Left and Still Missed the Point

Here's where Luke 15 does something that surprises people every time.

The older brother comes in from the field, hears the celebration, and refuses to go inside. He's furious. He's been faithful, obedient, hardworking, and nobody ever threw him a party.

And the father goes out to him too. Same love, different direction.

But the older brother's anger reveals something. He has been physically close to the father for years without ever really knowing his heart. He served out of duty and kept score the whole time. And the moment grace was given freely to someone he felt didn't deserve it, everything he'd been holding underneath the surface came out.

Jesus is speaking to two groups at once in these three parables. The people who know they are broken and need to come home. And the people who think they are fine and have quietly become proud about it.

It is entirely possible to be near religion and far from grace. To know every rule and not really know the Father.

The older brother's story is a warning dressed up as a subplot.

The Day My Grandson Charlie Got Lost in a Store

I want to bring this close to home with something personal.

My daughter took my little grandson Charlie shopping one day. And the way small children do, he got distracted by bright packaging and movement and wandered away without even realizing it at first. Then he looked up and nothing around him felt familiar.

His little eyes filled with panic. He didn't know which direction to go. So he just stood there and cried.

And then through all the noise and movement of a busy store, he heard something cut through everything else.

His mother's voice. Calling his name.

He didn't need a map after that. He didn't need instructions. He just needed to move toward the voice he knew.

That is Luke 15 in real life.

The voice of Christ cuts through shame, through pride, through wandering, through fear, through all the noise of a life that got confusing. And when He finds you, He doesn't scold you on the way back.

He carries you.

Where Are You in Luke 15?

Before you move on, sit with this question honestly for a moment.

Are you the sheep that wandered? The coin that got lost through pain that wasn't your fault? The younger son who needs to turn around and start walking home? Or the older brother, outwardly close but inwardly resistant to grace being given to someone you think doesn't deserve it?

Wherever you are in that story, the message running through all three parables is the same:

You are worth searching for.

And here is the line from Luke 15 I want to leave with you today:

"While he was still a long way off, his father saw him."

Before the son spoke, the father saw.

Before the son explained, the father ran.

Before the son could begin to repair what he'd broken, the father already loved him.

That is Christ's grace. Not grace for the polished or the impressive or the ones who have it together. Grace for the lost. And then the found.

The Father is still watching the road.
